R.E.M.
“After Hours”
Live circa 1989

R.E.M. closed most every show in the late Eighties with this Velvet Underground cover. Much in the same way they took Wire’s arty, minimalist “Strange” and turned it into a perky rave-up, their rendition of “After Hours” is goofy and corny, which is a pretty bold choice for a band as revered as the VU. I love this song as a sign-off for a long show - it’s such a sweet and literal way of saying goodbye.
