And here’s the real thing. This song is a perfectly crafted miniature, with just enough rich detail and emotional nuance to suggest an entire novel’s worth of plot and characterization. The bits that hit the hardest are so understated, as when he wonders “If you and me are so right, then why is it the same thing every night?” The moment feels true because it’s so fleeting in the song — the thought comes, but it’s too painful to dwell on for too long.
