“Like A Prayer”

Much in the way the video for Miles Fisher’s cover of “This Must Be The Place” makes a pleasant but ultimately unnecessary cover of a classic song feel fresh in a new context, this video makes an asset of our over-familiarity with the source material. This isn’t some commentary on Madonna the celebrity/artist, but instead some kind of  silly impressionistic take on being a girlish Madonna fan in the late 80s. It’s all wide-eyed innocence and cutesiness, but the sexuality and tension with religion and patriarchy in Madonna’s song is present, if buried under the surface. Just as it was when we were kids, that subtext is intuited, but not fully understood. (via Liz)
