“Cousins”
Garth Jennings, co-director of many, many great videos as half of Hammer & Tongs, and director of the brilliant and overlooked film Son Of Rambow, specializes in charming whimsy, and he nearly goes over the top with this clip for Vampire Weekend. It’s a perfect match for the song — frenetic and goofy, with a subtle edge and an assured grace. Ezra Koenig mugs for the camera relentlessly, incredibly eager to impress and entertain. This could easily come off as desperate and annoying, but the execution on both ends of the camera is so confident and sharp that it just seems cool and fun.
