sarahspy asked: What are your favorite 'under the radar'/underrated blogs right now (music-related or otherwise)?
I don’t read very many blogs that focus on music, but my current favorite internet writers have a way of writing about music in personal and creative ways that I find very entertaining and inspiring. Here’s a few:
Liz Colville writes Lizzyville and Veraville, and occasionally contributes to the Awl. Liz has really been on fire lately, and I’ve linked to her stuff a lot here in the recent past. She’s incredibly witty and insightful, pretty much always at the same time. I’m in awe of her.
Josh Luft writes What A Fool Believes, and a tumblr of the same name. He’s one of the funniest, most imaginative writers working right now. He’s got a very silly and warped sensibility, but his writing has a lot of heart and is can be sharply critical at times. He’s just overflowing with ideas, constantly turning out clever posts. Josh is a pretty amazing guy.
Kimberly Huston writes a tumblr called God, I’m In Bad Shape Right Now. A lot of the site is links and stuff, but she writes beautifully about music, particularly when she writes letters to musicians as a way of processing personal experiences.
Arianna Stern writes What The Hell, Summer Spell. Her post last week dramatizing an imaginary conversation with Karen O about dating and people’s expectations for female artists is a great example of what she’s really good at, i.e. personal writing filtered through imagination and irreverent humor.
A Grammar is a tumblr by Nitsuh Abebe, one of my colleagues at Pitchfork. Nitsuh is an extremely thoughtful and even-handed writer, and he excels at discussing contentious issues in the arts at length with a cool, rational demeanor and friendly wit. We’re all better off for having him around as a voice of reason.
Meghan Deans is a brilliant playwright, and an excellent writer in general. Her tumblr includes a lot of funny, insightful posts about theater, television, and music. She sometimes posts short stories over here. Meghan is a true hero, and if you live in NYC you really need to see her plays.
