shaunline asked: You talked about falling out of love with a band, but what about the opposite? Are there artists you had written off as "not for me" and then come to love later on?

The two biggest examples that come to mind are the Clash and Led Zeppelin, who I had written off when I was a lot younger for no good reason. But you know, there are a lot of artists — particularly older artists — that become more interesting to me as I get older. Sometimes it’s a matter of something taking on a new resonance and just “getting” it, and in other cases I find myself wanting to examine music that I grew up hearing on the radio but never gave a lot of thought. One of my key principles as a critic is that I am never wrong about what I like, but I may be wrong about what I dislike. We very often confuse not being able to connect with art for it not being good. It’s hard to predict when something you didn’t care about at some point will suddenly speak to you.
