This is Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional” downsampled to eight kilobits per second. Basically, when mp3s encode music, it is based on an algorithm designed to replicate the human eardrum, and it leaves out what the eardrum will fill in on its own. This degraded mp3 is the rawest essence of the track — the basic tonal elements, devoid of musical form. It comes out sounding like sonar, or like R2-D2 muttering in his sleep. This was created by Editor B, who also posted a track illustrating the step-by-step degradation of the track. (via Eric)
