Live From New York

While on the topic of SNL, what is up with the music booking this season? Last year had a really good mix of huge stars — Usher, Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood — and popular indie-ish acts like Arcade Fire, Spoon, Feist, and Wilco. Every act booked had legit hype and/or stardom. As far as big stars go this season, we’ve had Lil Wayne, and Coldplay is up next week. Totally legit, but everything else? Ugh. The Killers can be considered stars, I guess, but their last album was a flop and I’m pretty sure their new one is going to cement their has-been status. Kings of Leon are totally blah, David Cook is a joke, and though neither of them suck, Duffy and Adele are not particularly memorable or exciting.

So who should they be booking? Well, Beyonce, definitely. That’s a no-brainer. Of Montreal have attained a level of popularity worthy of the show, and would undoubtedly take advantage of the opportunity to do something very memorable. Another no-brainer. Britney Spears, for sure. M.I.A., why not? Obviously it’s not too late for that! Weezer and R.E.M., couldn’t go wrong with either of them. Murs could be interesting. Oh, oh, how about Marnie Stern? (A boy can dream, right?)
